30 Encouraging Bible Passages and Verses about Thankfulness

Sharing is caring!

There is something about the month of November and the approach of the Thanksgiving holiday that just evokes a more reflective spirit in most of us.

We jump on the social media bandwagon with gratitude challenges (which I actually love because they provide a much needed positive interruption from the negativity that fills so many of our daily feeds).

But instead of simply listing the things for which I’m thankful for all of my social media friends, this year I am focused on spending time telling God. I plan to spend the month of November reading through Scripture about gratitude, as well as writing out these passages and verses about thankfulness in my Scripture writing journal

I also plan to spend some time working on my own personal daily gratitude lists. This practice of physically writing out gratitude lists can truly become an act of worship.

Here are some of my favorite passages and Bible verses about thankfulness that I plan to focus on this month:

30 Encouraging Bible Passages and Verses about Thankfulness

  1. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Colossians 3:12-17

  2. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

  3. Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
        let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
     Let us come before him with thanksgiving
        and extol him with music and song.

    For the Lord is the great God,
        the great King above all gods.
    In his hand are the depths of the earth,
        and the mountain peaks belong to him.
    The sea is his, for he made it,
        and his hands formed the dry land.  Psalm 95:1-5

  4. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”  Hebrews 12:28

  5. Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
        Worship the Lord with gladness;
        come before him with joyful songs.
    Know that the Lord is God.
        It is he who made us, and we are his;
        we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

    Enter his gates with thanksgiving
        and his courts with praise;
        give thanks to him and praise his name.
    For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
        his faithfulness continues through all generations.  Psalm 100

  6. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
        his love endures forever.

    Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
        those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
    those he gathered from the lands,
        from east and west, from north and south.  Psalm 107:1-3

  7. Some wandered in desert wastelands,
        finding no way to a city where they could settle.
    They were hungry and thirsty,
        and their lives ebbed away.
    Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
        and he delivered them from their distress.
    He led them by a straight way
        to a city where they could settle.
    Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
        and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
    for he satisfies the thirsty
        and fills the hungry with good things.  Psalm 107:4-9
  8. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

  9. You are my God, and I will praise you;
        you are my God, and I will exalt you.  Psalm 118:28
  10. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
        let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
    Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;
        let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
    Let the trees of the forest sing,
        let them sing for joy before the Lord,
        for he comes to judge the earth.

    Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
        his love endures forever.

      1 Chronicles 16:31-34

  11. Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior;
        gather us and deliver us from the nations,
    that we may give thanks to your holy name,
        and glory in your praise.”
    Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
        from everlasting to everlasting.  1 Chronicles 16:35-36
  12. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
    His love endures forever.  Psalm 136:1
  13. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.Colossians 2:6-10

  14. It is good to praise the Lord
        and make music to your name, O Most High,
    proclaiming your love in the morning
        and your faithfulness at night,
    to the music of the ten-stringed lyre
        and the melody of the harp.

    For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
        I sing for joy at what your hands have done.

    Psalm 92:1-4

  15. Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.   Hebrews 13:15

  16. Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

    Ephesians 5:15-21

  17. Praise be to you, Lord,
        the God of our father Israel,
        from everlasting to everlasting.
    Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power
        and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
        for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
    Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
        you are exalted as head over all.
    Wealth and honor come from you;
        you are the ruler of all things.
    In your hands are strength and power
        to exalt and give strength to all.
    Now, our God, we give you thanks,
        and praise your glorious name.  1 Chronicles 29:10-13
  18. But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.  1 Chronicles 29:14

  19. Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.  Ephesians 5:1-4

  20. Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.   Colossians 4:2

  21. To you, Lord, I called;
        to the Lord I cried for mercy:
    “What is gained if I am silenced,
        if I go down to the pit?
    Will the dust praise you?
        Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
    Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;
        Lord, be my help.”

    You turned my wailing into dancing;
        you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
    that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
        Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

    Psalm 30:8-12

  22. But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?   2 Corinthians 2:14-16

  23. Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;

        make known among the nations what he has done.
    Sing to him, sing praise to him;
        tell of all his wonderful acts.
    Glory in his holy name;
        let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
    Look to the Lord and his strength;
        seek his face always.

    Remember the wonders he has done,
        his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,
    you his servants, the descendants of Israel,
        his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
    He is the Lord our God;
        his judgments are in all the earth.

    1 Chronicles 16:8-14

  24. Surely God is my salvation;
        I will trust and not be afraid.
    The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;
        he has become my salvation.”
    With joy you will draw water
        from the wells of salvation.

    In that day you will say:

    “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
        make known among the nations what he has done,
        and proclaim that his name is exalted.
    Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;
        let this be known to all the world.
    Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
        for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

    Isaiah 12:2-6

  25.  I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  1 Corinthians 1:4-9

  26. I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  1 Timothy 2:1-2

  27. But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

  28. For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.  Colossians 1:9-14

  29. Let those who love the Lord hate evil,
        for he guards the lives of his faithful ones
        and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
    Light shines on the righteous
        and joy on the upright in heart.
    Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous,
        and praise his holy name.  Psalm 97:10-12
  30. Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

    This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
