5 Powerful Ways to Pray for Your Husband

If you ask me, I will tell you that I believe strongly in the power of prayer. I understand that prayer invites God into my situation and opens my heart to His will for my life. I know how much prayer can change my attitude, my situation, and the lives of those around me. Intellectually, I know these things; however — practically speaking — I fail to pray as I should.

In 2020, I’m committing to pray more often and more specifically for my husband. Marriages are constantly under attack, and more than ever I need to be praying for God’s protection over my marriage and over my husband’s life. To this end, I’ve developed a free printable I can easily slide into the front cover of my Bible. When I’m spending time with the Lord, this guide is always there to remind me of five powerful prayers I can pray for my husband.

5 Powerful Ways to Pray for Your Husband

Specific Strategic Prayers for My Husband:

  1. That God will grant him wisdom. God promises that when we ask for wisdom, we will receive it: If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you (James 1:5). I’ve latched onto this promise for myself and my husband. We recently wrote a devotional guide for our tween children on the book of Proverbs, and highlighted the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing the right answers, but wisdom is the ability to make the right choices. We’ve all known a lot of very smart people who’ve made really bad choices. My prayer for my husband is that he will know the right, wise decisions to make throughout his day.
  2. That God will protect him from temptation. When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, he included this line: And lead us not into temptation (Matthew 6:13). In today’s digital world, I think about how often he inadvertently stumble upon suggestive or downright indecent images. Even if he’s not intentionally searching for these pictures initially, they can easily ignite the desire within him to continue clicking and eventually taking him places he never intended to go. Additionally, whatever other temptations he may face in his day, I pray for God’s protection over him.
  3. That God will grow his character. In Psalm 139, King David prayed: Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:23-24). God is able to take all of my husband’s experiences — good and bad — to grow his character. I pray for this to be true in his life, and for him to recognize these opportunities for growth. In Romans 5, Paul wrote about suffering, and how God uses these difficult times in growing us: suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3-4). My prayer is that God would use his trials and victories to grow his character each day.
  4. That God will protect his thought life. Throughout his day, I know that he is hit with thoughts that are not from God. These thoughts might be temptations, like an inappropriate ad on some website. They may be thoughts of discouragement, trying to convince him that he’s not able to do what God has called him to do. They might be prideful thoughts, trying to lead him to self-sufficiency. My prayer for him is that he would be able to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). And, that he would heed the words from Paul to the church at Philippi: “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).
  5. That God will provide him with the right friendships. I know that he needs friends who can speak into his life. I understand how much damage the wrong friendships can cause: Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character” (I Corinthians 15:33). Conversely, good, godly friendship are invaluable: As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). I pray that the Lord will surround him with friends who are wise and Biblically grounded. I pray that they will encourage him in life and in his walk with Jesus. I pray that they will speak truth and that God will use them to help my husband make good and wise decisions. I pray that they will sharpen his character, and that in turn he will do the same for them.

While prayer is absolutely one of the best and most powerful ways we can invest in our husbands and in our marriages, other practical steps are necessary as well. My husband and I just published a book on marriage, Why Toothpaste Matters. Our goal was for this book to be short (so husbands will actually read it), practical and honest. And, of course, Biblically sound.

We pray it is all of these things and we certainly hope it will be a help to many. This book is written for couple in various stages of marriage, no matter the current health of the relationship. We pray this will serve as a fresh start, or “reboot” if you will, for you in your marriage.
